Learning to Sit Still With Your Feelings
Sometimes life moves so fast that we barely notice how we feel. Emotions get pushed aside, bottled up, or ignored. Yet true healing often starts when we pause and allow ourselves to sit with our feelings — even the uncomfortable ones.

The Honest Struggle
Feeling sad, anxious, or frustrated can be uncomfortable. Many of us have been taught to “stay busy” or “think positive” to avoid these feelings. But avoiding emotions doesn’t make them disappear — it just pushes them deeper.
Sitting with your feelings isn’t about wallowing. It’s about creating space for awareness, understanding, and eventually, release.
Faith Perspective
Even in Scripture, moments of stillness are sacred. Jesus often withdrew to pray and reflect. Pausing to sit with your heart, to be honest with God about what you’re feeling, can be a spiritual act as well as an emotional one.
Mental Health Connection
Psychologically, acknowledging your feelings helps regulate your nervous system, reduces anxiety, and prevents emotional buildup. Naming your emotions allows your brain to process them instead of reacting impulsively.
Simple Practices to Sit With Your Feelings
Label your emotions. Name what you’re feeling without judgment.
Journal freely. Write down thoughts and sensations without censoring yourself.
Practice mindfulness. Focus on your breath or sensations in your body.
Prayer or reflection. Speak honestly to God or sit in silent reflection.
Closing Encouragement
It’s okay to feel. It’s okay to pause. Learning to sit with your feelings is a gift to yourself and your growth, helping you respond to life with clarity instead of reacting from overwhelm.
